224 – Pub Ride (Boat Inn)

Wednesday, 5th July 2017

Distance: 18 miles – Difficulty: 3/5 – Weather: Warm

Four riders made the start on a lovely, warm Summer’s evening. The group headed away from the Choir Hall, past the David Broome Event Centre towards Crick. Through the back lanes to Hayes Gate and on-wards through Mathern, taking on the steep climb of Dark Hill to Bulwark. A descent through the woods to Garden City, before reaching our destination on the historic riverbank at Chepstow, and the Boat Inn.

Following much needed refreshment and food, it was time to go back through the narrow streets, with the joy of ascending the steep School Hill back to Garden City. From there it was a reverse of the outbound route before arriving back in Caldicot.

Sunday, 26th June 2015

Although there was a showery start to the ride, the rain eventually cleared up and the sun came out, for a nice ride down to Goldcliff and the Seawall Cafe. Starting off at the Choir Hall, the group made they way through Caerwent, Carrow Hill and Magor, passing through Wilcrick and onto the Queensway past Llanwern Steelworks before arriving in Goldcliff and the Seawall Tearooms. Fully refreshed with coffee and teacakes, a small deter was made to the aptly named ‘Gold Cliff’, which stands near Hill Top Farm.  A marvelous view of the Severn Estuary can be had, from the bridges across to the English side, and further out to sea. With more photographs taken, it was time to head back home to Caldicot via Redwick, Undy and Rogiet.

Sunday, 18th June 2017

Distance: 36 miles – Difficulty: 3/5 – Weather: Hot

What a scorcher? Five riders made the start at the Choir Hall for the annual Roman Holiday ride to Caerleon, meeting two more cyclists at Magor. With the temperature hotting-up, and the climbs getting harder, welcome breaks were taken on at Newbridge on Usk, and in the shade of the at Tredunnock village green before reaching Caerleon and the ‘Green’ cafe for coffee and cakes. The hard work was not over though, more climbing through Bulmore and to the top of Cats Ash, with temperatures well into the 80’s, before heading back to Caldicot and home for a cool shower. Well done everyone.

Sunday, 4th June 2017

Distance: 15 miles (from Undy) – 28 miles (from Caldicot) – Difficulty: 2/5 – Weather: wet and windy

The latest Starter Ride saw five riders leave the Choir Hall and join up with Chris and Jan Orum at Undy Church, for the flat ride down to the Seawall Tearooms for coffee and cake. The weather didn’t look too inviting, but apart from a squally shower on the marshes road, luckily enough we managed to avoid getting too wet, and arrived back in Caldicot about five minutes before a torrential downpour. Good to see Chris and Jan come back out to join some of the regulars, I believe that they enjoyed the ride.

217 – Redwick 8 Hour Challenge

Sunday, 21st May 2017

Another successful Redwick Challenge is over. The 2017 edition saw 36 riders tackle the near 2 mile Redwick circuit, on a lovely Spring day. Choristers, friends, and locals joined in, spurred on by family and friends who came to see the spectacle. There was some amazing feats achieved by the riders, but none of this could be achieved without the army of support people who helped with lap counting, getting refreshments, providing food, registration, massage and numerous other tasks that need to be undertaken. Before we get to the riders, a big thank you to Dave Kirton, Peter Williams, Sharon Ward, Chris Nolan, Jane Stallard, Stefan Edwards and Ron Stewart, the supporters and the local people at Redwick and the Rose Inn.

On to the riding, amazingly five riders achieved more than 100 miles, with Brian Stephens completing 62 laps (120 miles) to take the top male prize. Best female was Carolyn Griffiths with 25 laps (49 miles). The choir recently lost one of its treasured members, Theo Roberts who was always the first man to help out at any event the choir, and the cycle club put on. In his memory, the Theo Roberts Memorial Cup was commissioned and it was ridden for by the four sections of the Choir (Tenor, 2nd Tenor, Baritone and Bass). It was fitting that the first running of this competition was won by the Baritone Section, of which Theo was a treasured member.

This was part of a series of events the choir and its associated cycle club and golf section, are putting on this year to raise money for the Severn View Sensory Garden project in Chepstow, to help enhance the lives of Dementia sufferers the home caters for. A big thank you to all involved, and over £430 was raised on the day.
