253 – Ice Cold Seawall

Sunday, 25th February 2018

Distance: 32 miles – Difficulty: 2/5 – Weather: Fine but freezing

Despite the very cold weather, four riders made the start at the Choir Hall, with the planned route to Caerleon being shelved in-case of icy roads. Instead, the four brave soles decided on a trip to the Seawall Cafe in Goldcliff, stopping for a warm and refreshments. It was nice to meet Maxine Rhodes on her first ride with us, hope she will come back again in the near future.

251 – Severn Beach

Sunday, 11th February 2018

Distance: 30 miles – Difficulty: 3/5 – Weather: Cold and Windy

Breezy ride over the bridge to Severn Beach, sunshine, hailstones and head-wind made it one to remember. Five riders made the start at the Choir Hall, climbing to Parkwall descending past St Pierre to Mathern. Tough climb to Bulwark before riding over the bridge, with a tail-wind helping us on the way. Through the lanes to Severn Beach, very blowy, just stopped for photos before making our way through muddy lanes to the Swan Inn at Tockington. Coffee and cakes consumed, time to head for the bridge and take on the wall of the head-wind, back to Caldicot.

250 – Night Ride (Rose Inn)

Wednesday, 31st January 2018

Distance: 15 miles – Difficulty: 1/5 – Weather: Fine but cold

Chilly ride into a biting wind, down along the gravel path to Redwick and the Rose Inn. Three riders made the start at the Choir Hall, but we were joined by Lesley and Ian Russell who cycled in from Penhow. Another three members also came down by car, to tuck into the fine menu of curries, fish, cheese, rice etc. washed down by pints of ale.

It was soon time to leave the snug lounge of the pub and head back into the cold for the ride back to Caldicot (and Penhow).

249 – Pedalaway (Coleford)

Sunday, 28th January 2018

Distance: 16 miles – Difficulty: 2/5 – Weather: Sunny

Nice ride on the trails at Coleford, although impossible to get in the cafe due to the number of people there for the downhill competition. Six riders travelled there, but unfortunately, due to the parking issues we never caught up with Chris James. Trails were fairly muddy, but we ventured onto new routes led by Neil Birbeck who knows has way around the forest. Great day, no rain, and the sun shone.
