Six riders made the start of the latest club run at the Choir Hall. The route took us across to Sudbrook and a brief stop at Black Rock for photos before the first climb of the day up through Leechpool. From there it was on the A48 descending St. Pierre hill turning off through the lanes to Mathern. The steep slopes of Dark Hill tested the riders climbing skills before reaching Bulwark, turning up through Fair View and past the hospital to drop down to the racecourse. Another hill up through St. Arvans before the long winding descent to Tintern and then Brockweir.

A ten minute stop at Brockweir too take in the fabulous views of the Wye Valley and more photographs before the return journey stopping off for a break at the Old Tintern Station for coffee and cakes. The longest climb of the day from Tintern to St. Arvans before heading back to the racecourse at Chepstow.

The next stage of the ride included the climb up to Shirenewton, before the quick descent to Crick then Mount Ballan before arriving back at the Choir Hall. A tough ride of 30 miles including 3,000 feet of climbing.

A very pleasant ride down to the Sea Wall Cafe on a day that started out with rain, which soon cleared for some beautiful late summer sunshine.

Five riders left the Choir Hall including new member Kaf Faragher from Abergavenny, and we were soon joined by four members from our friends at Newport Social Cycling who had ridden to Caldicot to meet us.

The route saw us leaving Caldicot, dropping down to Caerwent then along the A48 to Five Lanes. From there it was a climb over Carrow Hill before joining St. Bride’s Road to Magor. Up past the Brewery, turning down the lane to Wilcrick and on wards to the Queensway to Newport. From there via Broad Common and Chapel Lane to Goldcliff for a stop at the Seawall Cafe for coffee and cake.

Following our break at the cafe, we said goodbye to our friends from Newport and headed back through Redwick, it seemed wrong not to stop at the Rose Inn and introduce Kaf to it’s fine range of beverages. Whilst there, we were introduced to some magnificent Black Russian Terriers, huge dogs that are used by the Russian Army, who were out on their afternoon stroll.

Littleton-upon-Severn is a village in South Gloucestershire near the mouth of the River Severn and is located to the west of Thornbury. The village became famous on 15 January 1885 when a whale was stranded on the river shore there. That area of the village has since been named Whale Wharf.

Six members headed off over the Severn Bridge into England and visited the pretty village of Littleton Upon Severn with a stop at the White Hart Inn. The ride coincided with the Severn Bridge Half-Marathon so it was with great heart we were able to cheer them on as we rode past them. The pub is very much worth another visit, the smell of Sunday roasts was delicious.

The ride was finished off with the Ice Bucket Challenge taken up by David, Chris and Tony, with water chuckers Carolyn and Kirstie filmed by Sue – great laugh!
