You can tell that Spring is on its way as the Wednesday night trip to the Rose Inn started in the light for the first time this year. Four riders made the trip and would like to extend a warm welcome to Helen Gilmore who travelled down from Pontypool to join us on the ride.

Following pints of Reverend James and some lovely nosh, it was time to leave the cosy bar at the Rose and head back to Caldicot through the darkness.

Tough ride today, that long climb up through Shirenewton and on to Gaerllwyd before the fast descent in Usk. Had to stop in Cafe 49 for coffee and well-deserved cake before the ride back to Caldicot via Llantrisant, Cats Ash and Magor. Nice to meet Gareth Davies today who rode into Caldicot from Bassaleg before we started the climb. Well done everybody.

Pleasant ride down to the Rose Inn for a drink and food. Unfortunately no Reverend James on but Bacon and Brie melt, Chicken Curry, Sausage and chips, Chicken and chips and Cottage Pie was washed down with other cider and beer.

We were seen off from the Choir Hall by Leanne Hill and her children, one of which Annalese we are supporting this year with our charity efforts.

On a bright but cold and windy winter morning, three riders made the trip from the Choir Hall through Caerwent, Carrow Hill and Magor towards Goldcliff and the Newport Wetlands at Nash. Stopping off at our favourite cafe for coffee and cakes before heading back through Redwick, Undy and Rogiet back to Caldicot.

Distance: 36 miles

Difficulty: 2/5 (although it felt much harder than this)

Well after three aborted attempts we finally made it down to the Rose Inn on a Night Ride. A clear but windy evening saw the three musketeers make the 16 mile round trip to the pub with a stop for Cottage Pie and Reverend James.

Well, it wasn’t the Wentwood Workout as planned due to the icy conditions but we did see it as we went past on the A48.

The day didn’t get off to a good start as we where informed that Leon Jones had fallen on the ice on his way over to the Choir Hall and had injured his shoulder. However, 13 riders made their way over towards Sudbrook only for Shane Carey to fall in Portskewett followed by a mass pile-up involving Chris Nolan, Russ Woodward and Sue Earnshaw, skidding on the black ice entering Sudbrook.

Upon reaching Black Rock, a discussion took place regarding whether to continue to Shirenewton and onwards to Wentwood but for safety sake, it was decided to stick to the treated roads and head for Newport down the A48, stopping at McDonalds for coffee and returning via Magor.

Distance 25 miles.

The first ride of the new year saw 10 riders leave the Choir Hall on a fine but cold morning.

The route saw the cyclists climb out of Caldicot towards Caerwent then Carrow Hill. Turning right at Magor past the Brewery and onwards towards Underwood then Bishton and Llanwern via a number of short sharp climbs. Into Newport along the Ringland bye-pass to Broad Common and the the Seawall at Goldcliff. A stop for refreshments of coffee, cake and teacakes before the frozen riders made the return to Caldicot via Undy and Rogiet.

Good to see a number of riders returning to the fold, things look good for 2015.

Lovely ride down to the Rose Inn on a sunny morning. Eight riders out including newcomers Marion Davidson and also John Faragher all the way from Abergavenny. Tony Ward struggling with a bad back drove down to the Rose.

This was the last scheduled ride of 2014, plenty of exciting events planned for 2015.

The last ride before Christmas saw a disappointing turn-out of only three riders on a cold Winter’s morning. The initial route through Underwood and Llanwern was cut short due to the impending rain that was due to come-in in the afternoon. In fact, only two riders made it to the Seawall Cafe for mince pies and coffee as Tony had to turn-back at Magor due to persistent pain in the toes caused by gout.
