Distance: 14 miles – Difficulty: 1/5 – Weather: Drizzly Rain – No. Riders: 4

Well the weather started out fine and dry but by the time we hit the lanes around Magor, the wind and drizzle picked-up and it was a welcome relief to arrive at the warm, hospitable Rose Inn. It was great to meet Chris Nolan and Kirstie Benjamin there, more sensible taking the car rather than a muddy bike.

Lasagne, Curry, Liver with chips of course consumed, washed down with pints of Hobgoblin and John Smiths before it was time to hit the soaking tracks through the by now incessant drizzle.

Distance : 32 miles – Difficulty : 2/5 – Type : Road

What a beautiful day for a bike ride, no-one would think it is November 1st, just weeks away from Christmas with the sun shining brightly along the Monmouthshire Levels.

Eight riders made the start at the Choir Hall as this latest club ride headed out towards Caerwent, Carrow Hill and Magor through St. Brides. A brief stop at the model airplane field to watch the boys playing with their toys before heading to Goldcliff via the Llanwern Steelworks Queensway.

A visit to the Seawall Tearooms, which was doing brisk business with Pontypool Cycle Club just leaving as we arrived and half-an-hour later, our trade was replaced by John Wheat and his intrepid Newport Social Cycling group. It was good to catch-up with these fellow enthusiasts, and after swapping stories it was heading home via Redwick, Undy and Rogiet to Caldicot.

A thoroughly enjoyable morning.

Hoggin’ the Bridge day saw nine members of the cycle club leave the Choir Hall and head for Chepstow, to pick up a tenth rider and head across the Severn Bridge. With a stop near Aust Services, the cyclists witnessed a few hundred of the 4,000 plus motorbikes on the way to the charity ride. Photographs taken, it was onward towards Berkeley with a stop for refreshment at the Tearooms in the centre of the historic town before heading back across the Severn Bridge and Wales.

It was good to welcome Tracey Eastabrook’s son Jamie, and Andrew Alford for their first ride with the club. Hope you enjoyed.

Family Trail – 10 miles – Difficulty: 2/5

Verderers Trail – 7 miles – Difficulty : 4/5

Great day on the forest trails at Coleford Pedalabikeaway – Three riders took on the more daring Verderers Trail whilst the others rode the more sedate Family Trail. Everyone came into the cafe safe and sound except for Nick, who decided to take a wrong turn on the Verderers and ended-up going over his handlebars on a steep descent. Ego and legs bruised, soon put right with a bacon sandwich and a cup of coffee – he even went back out and done the Family Trail afterwards. It was good to see Glyn Watkins in the cafe, he was out for a ride with the Monmouthshire Wheelers.

The latest Night Ride to the Rose Inn, was on a fine but getting chilly Autumn evening. Seven riders made the start, the route taking us down the Moors road, across the gravel tracks to Undy and onward to Redwick.

An hour was spent at the pub, sampling the fine cuisine and beer, before leaving the roaring fire behind and venturing into the cold night heading for home.

Distance – 10 miles – Difficulty – 3/5

A glorious morning in the Forest of Dean saw nine members head for the trails, two taking on the more difficult Verderers Trail, while the others headed for the Family Trail.

It was nice to greet another new member, Francesca Cooper from Cardiff, hope you enjoyed it Francesca. Everybody had a fantastic time at this outstanding venue and the event was concluded with coffee and beefburgers cooked on the barbeque at the busy bike cafe.

The forest is home to Wild Boar, and three of the large creatures were seen crossing the road on the way too and on leaving the Cycle Centre.

Distance – 19 miles : Difficulty – 1/5

Well the Winter months have started early with the weather fine at the start but turning into a rainy, soggy evening enlightened by the warm glow of the fire at the Rose as well as the beer and chips. It was a welcome sight for the five brave riders who found leaving the pleasant hostelry that much harder. The return journey was marred by a puncture, fixing it not nice on a wet and windy evening, but everybody returned home safe and sound.

Distance: 27 miles – Difficulty: 3/5 – Type: Road

On a glorious Autumn morning, four riders departed from the Choir Hall and made their way to Wentwood via Portskewett, Leechpool, Shirenewton and Earlswood. After all the climbing, it was a rapid downhill swoop to Llanvaches and onto Magor, meeting up with a large group from Newport Social Cycling who we rode down with through St. Brides to the village. Our coffee stop was supposed to be Donnie’s only to find it closed, but coffee and Mars bars in the beer garden under glorious sunshine and cloudless skies before making our way back to Caldicot.

The last of the series of Pub Rides saw four riders leave the Choir Hall in what supposed to be a wet evening that turned out fine. We would like to welcome another new member, Janet Vale who dusted down her mountain bike and joined the ride to the Rose Inn in Redwick. It was difficult to leave the cosy warmth of the pub following refreshments, but in full darkness (first time in a while), the riders made their way along the gravel tracks back to Caldicot.
