144 – Night Ride (Rose Inn)

Distance : 15 miles – Riders : 3 – Weather : Very cold and icy

Arctic conditions faced the three brave venturers, who made the treacherous ride to Redwick, spurred-on by the thoughts of Hobgoblin and chips at the Rose Inn. They were welcomed at the pub by fellow cycling, more sensible friends (Kirstie Benjamin, Sue Earnshaw and Chris Nolan) to enjoy a drink, some food and a general natter. Food scoffed, drinks consumed, it was time for the three mad-persons to don the lycra, and become moving icicles on the road back to Caldicot.

Spare a thought for Neil and Helen Gilmore who were expected to make the start, but had their bikes stolen from the car at St. Cadoc’s Hospital.

143 – Coleford Trailer 1

An excellent day was had at the Pedalaway Cycle Centre in the Forest of Dean despite the cold weather. Eight riders made the trek to Coleford, three taking on the exhilarating Verderers Trail of 7 miles of uphill, and fast downhills, whilst five others rode the more sedate Family Trail.

It was first time at the centre for Tracey, David Vass, Grahame and Rob Stallard, who all enjoyed the experience, a little bit different to riding on the lanes to Redwick etc. The day didn’t start too well for Grahame, despite changing his tyres and fixing a puncture yesterday evening, had another before the start today and ended up hiring a bike. He also forgot his gloves, so the frostbite in his fingers was only thawed out by the hot coffee and bacon roll in the cafe.

The first club ride of the new year, and also the first dry day as well, saw eight members leave the Choir Hall, heading for the warm glow of the Rose Inn, Redwick. With no dramas to add for a change, it was scrumptious food and drink all round, poses for photographs before it was time to head out into the cold winter’s night heading back to Caldicot.

Despite heavy rain, six members turned-up at the Choir Hall to venture to the Millers Arms in Mathern, in what was a very wet and muddy ride. The route saw us take in the views at Black Rock, first time experience for some people, before crossing over to Crick and via the back lanes (very wet) to Mounton. The steep climb up to Bayfield helped blow some of the turkey out, before crossing Pwllmeyric Hill and taking Chapel Lane down to the pretty village of Mathern. With the pub not opening till noon, we had to waste a bit of time so it was a visit to the lovely village church before returning to the pub. A number of pints (not too many) was had, Butcombe was only £2.50, before making our way back to Caldicot via Hayes Gate, Crick and Caerwent. Although very wet, great ride with lovely company.

Distance = 17 miles – Weather = Windy, but fine evening – Number of Riders = 4

The last event before Christmas, saw unlike the last event no mishaps – it was all plain-sailing for the four intrepid cyclists who ventured out on the windy coastal lanes to Redwick and the Rose Inn pub. Fully refreshed with beer, chips and other varied savouries, not to mention gout tablets, it was back along the darkened lanes, brightened the numerous Christmas lightshows to Caldicot via Undy and the gravel tracks.

Merry Christmas to our members and supporters.

137 – Night Ride (Rose Inn)

Wednesday, 25th November 2015

Five riders made the start at the Choir Hall on a balmy (for late November) evening, heading down the back lanes to the Rose Inn at Redwick. The evening turned out to be very eventful, the outbound journey saw a crash that nearly saw Tracey swimming in the reen before losing her rear light. Then it was two punctures (well one puncture and the spare tube was useless as well) for Carolyn, our blushes spared by a local cyclist in Undy who went home and whipped the tube out of his wife’s bike! Thank you the kind gentleman from Undy, how is he going to explain that!

Finally we arrived at the Rose some forty-five minutes behind schedule. We all deserved a beer (or two) and a hearty meal by the roaring fire.

Time to make the return trip, surely this is going to be ok! – Ah-ah, on the motorway bridge at Rogiet once we had said farewell to Rob, Sue and Carolyn’s lights gave out leaving them to ride the dark lanes back to Caldicot following the others lights. All was going well until Sue took a tumble on the new access path to Caldicot Station finishing off a very eventful, but enjoyable evening.
