Thirteen walkers turned-up at the Coach and Horses in Caerwent for the latest walk, this time to the Silurian Hill Fort at Llanmelin. Walking past Caerwent’s roman ruins before crossing the A48 and heading towards Llanfair Discoed, turning off to the hidden valley of the Cwm. Noticing a Queen Victoria post box, some beautiful houses before the steep climb up towards Shirenewton, turning into the woods and eventually finding the hill fort.
Not much to see especially at this time of year, very overgrown but the outlines could be clearly made out. The return journey was via the same route, with a number of walkers enjoying a drink and Sunday lunch at the Coach and Horses.

Five riders made the start at the Choir Hall on an overcast morning. Nice to finally meet up with Margaret and Peter Hurst for their first ride with us. The route took us over to Black Rock, through Crick and Caerwent to the Cwm, back to Llanfair Discoed onto Carrow Hill, Magor and Llandevenny, then onto Bishton and Llanwern, stopping at the Milton Hotel for refreshments. The trip back was via Spytty, Magor, Undy and Rogiet to Caldicot.

Fabulous walk to the medieval Church of St. James at Lancaut, on the promontory of the River Wye. Staring from Chepstow Castle, over the Wye Bridge and up the steep hill towards Tutshill, before following the Offa’s Dyke path. A diversion, dropping down the cliff path towards the river, clambering over a boulder field and walking through the woods to the little church. After stopping and exploring the ancient ruin, still in remarkably good shape, a long climb past the old lime kilns to Lancaut Lane and finally reaching the main road, just north of Woodcroft. Back on the Offa’s Dyke path, stopping for photos at Wintours Leap, with stunning views of the river, and returning back to Chepstow. Day was finished off with a pint and pork pie in the Three Tuns pub.

Five riders turned-up at the Choir Hall for the Grand Depart, missing newcomers Peter and Margaret Hurst (we did see them later) for the ride to Goldcliff and the Seawall Tearooms. The route included Caerwent, Carrow Hill and Magor before meeting Grahame Morton at Redwick (he had already departed), for coffee and cake at the cafe. The return journey saw the group cycle through Undy and Rogiet, returning to the Choir Hall by the back lanes from Rogiet.
