Choir Riders – Redwick Challenge

Sunday, 4th June 2023

Since 2013 the Choir’s associated Cycle Club, Cor Meibion Caldicot Cycle Club has been raising money for charities and good causes and has raised over £50,000 in that time.

One of its major events is the Redwick Challenge where cyclists are challenged to ride as many laps of 2 miles each around the Redwick circuit starting at the Rose Inn.

This year, on a glorious sunny day 4th June over 20 took part; not only cyclists but walkers, electric bikes and motorised chairs. Walkers included Musical directors Sian Hatton and Shirley Anne James who each completed two circuits. Although the record stands at over 50 laps, this year guest riders Brian Stephens completed 40 and Phil Bates completed 37.

Leading choristers were Russ Woodward and event organiser Tony Griffiths with 26 laps each. The results; Brian 40 laps, Phil 37, Russ 26, Tony 26, Nick 20, Julie 20, Louise 20, Leon 18, Deb 17, Dai 15, Christine 12, Garry 12, Carolyn 10, Sue 8, Grahame 7, Rob 2, Jayne 2, Gaynor 2, Shirl 2, Sian 2, Alyn & Sue (Tandem). Also Steve for walking from Caldicot to Redwick.

Helpers and supporters on the day were Owen, Dave C, Roger, John, Vanessa, Lyn, Colleen, Stefan, Peter, Wendy and our Chairman Spike who travelled down from Cheltenham. Thanks to the Rose Inn and the people of Redwick.

A special thanks must go to chorister Grahame Morton who not only completed 7 laps but was largely responsible for the logistics of the event.

The event raised over £320 to help the choir to refurbish and repair the roof structure of the Choir Hall. The next event organised by Tony is the 22 mile Three Peaks Challenge of The Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid mountains near Abergavenny on July 8th. Tony says that you need not complete the whole route to take part.
